# EU withdrawal button: what online shops must add

19 October 2026 · Ax Holding Group™

![EU withdrawal button for online shops](https://www.axholdinggroup.com/hubfs/blog/eu-withdrawal-button-online-shops.jpg)

Quick answer

From 19 June 2026, EU countries must apply Directive (EU) 2023/2673, which requires online shops selling to consumers to offer a withdrawal function: a prominent button labelled “withdraw from contract here” or equivalent, a “confirm withdrawal” step, and an acknowledgement of receipt showing the date and time on a durable medium.

If you sell on Amazon and also run your own Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop store, this change lands on your own store. A PDF form in the footer or a customer service email address is no longer the whole answer: consumers must be able to withdraw from an online purchase on the site itself, in a few clicks. Here is what the rule says, where Spain stands on it and what to check.

## What is the EU withdrawal button and where does it come from?

The requirement comes from Directive (EU) 2023/2673 of 22 November 2023. Although its title refers to financial services contracts concluded at a distance, it inserts a new Article 11a into Directive 2011/83/EU on consumer rights. That article covers every distance contract concluded through an online interface, which includes selling goods through an online shop.

The directive set two dates for EU member states:

| Milestone | Date |
| --- | --- |
| Adopt and publish national transposition measures | By 19 December 2025 |
| Apply those measures | From 19 June 2026 |

The button does not replace the existing routes, it adds to them. Consumers can still withdraw using the model withdrawal form or any other unequivocal statement.

## What must the online withdrawal function include?

Article 11a is very specific. This is what it requires:

| Element | What the rule requires |
| --- | --- |
| Entry button | Labelled “withdraw from contract here” or a corresponding unambiguous formulation, easily legible |
| Visibility | Prominently displayed on the online interface and easily accessible |
| Availability | Continuously available throughout the withdrawal period |
| Data you may ask for | The consumer’s name, details identifying the contract and details of the electronic means for sending the confirmation |
| Confirmation step | A function labelled only with “confirm withdrawal” or a corresponding unambiguous formulation |
| Acknowledgement of receipt | On a durable medium (an email, for example), with the content of the withdrawal and the date and time it was submitted, without undue delay |

One important detail: if the consumer submits the statement before the withdrawal period ends, they have withdrawn in time. The date and time on your acknowledgement is therefore evidence for both of you.

## Does it apply if I only sell on Amazon?

The rule covers contracts concluded through an online interface and requires the trader to ensure the consumer can withdraw using this function. If you sell only on a marketplace, the interface is not yours: you cannot add a button to an Amazon product page, so the sensible step is to check how that marketplace handles withdrawals for your orders.

Where you definitely have work to do is your own store. There you control the interface, so that is where you will need to apply it, including when you sell from your site to consumers in other EU countries. The directive is EU law, so it does not cover sales to consumers in the UK.

## Where does Spain stand on transposition?

On 7 January 2026, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved the draft Consumer Credit Contracts Bill, which also transposes the distance financial services directive by amending Spain’s consolidated consumer protection law (TRLGDCU). According to the government’s official summary, it includes “the obligation to establish a withdrawal function in the online interface”.

As of 19 October 2026 we have found no transposing law published in Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE). Because the EU application date has already passed, the prudent move is to adapt your store now and ask your legal adviser how it affects you. We will update this article once the Spanish law is published.

## What stays the same in the right of withdrawal?

The button is new, but the core rules of Directive 2011/83/EU and Spanish law are unchanged:

| Rule | What it says |
| --- | --- |
| Period | 14 days to withdraw without giving a reason |
| Start for sales of goods | The day the consumer acquires physical possession of the goods; for an order delivered in several parts, from the last one |
| If you do not inform about the right | The period is extended by 12 months from the end of the initial period |
| Refund | Within 14 calendar days of being informed of the withdrawal, including standard delivery costs where applicable |
| Withholding | You may wait until you receive the goods back or proof that they have been sent back, whichever comes first, unless you offered to collect them |

## Checklist: how to adapt your online store

1. Check whether your platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop or another) offers the function built in or through an app or module, and whether it meets every point of Article 11a.
2. Place a “withdraw from contract here” button somewhere prominent and easy to find, such as the customer’s order area and the footer.
3. Keep it available throughout the withdrawal period, including for guest checkouts.
4. Keep the form to what is needed: name, order identification and an email address for the confirmation.
5. Add the final step with a single “confirm withdrawal” button.
6. Send an automatic acknowledgement email with the content of the request and its date and time.
7. Keep a record of every request so you can prove the timings.
8. Update your terms of sale and returns policy to mention the new route.
9. Line up the 14-calendar-day refund with receiving and checking returned goods at your warehouse.

## Frequently asked questions

### When does the EU withdrawal button become mandatory?

Directive (EU) 2023/2673 requires member states to apply the withdrawal function from 19 June 2026. In Spain, the transposing law had not been published in the BOE as of 19 October 2026.

### What wording must the button use?

“Withdraw from contract here” or a corresponding unambiguous formulation, easily legible. The final step must be labelled only with “confirm withdrawal” or a corresponding unambiguous formulation.

### Is a PDF form or a contact email enough?

The model withdrawal form remains valid, but it does not replace the online function. In an online store, consumers must also be able to withdraw through a button on the site itself.

### What information can I ask the customer for?

Their name, details identifying the contract (such as the order number) and the electronic means by which they want to receive the confirmation.

### Do I have to send a confirmation?

Yes. You must send, without undue delay, an acknowledgement of receipt on a durable medium, such as an email, with the content of the withdrawal and the date and time it was submitted.

### Does the 14-day period change?

No. The period is still 14 days from when the customer receives the goods (or up to 12 months longer if you did not give the withdrawal information), and the refund is due within 14 calendar days of being told about the withdrawal.
